Beyond the Skin: Why I Believe We Need to Look Deeper.

Updated: Aug 18

Eczema. Atopic dermatitis. Psoriasis.

Three words that millions of people hear every day.

And yet, despite how much these conditions can affect someone's life, we often talk about them as though they are simply a skin problem.

I don't believe it's that simple.

And that's one of the reasons I'm taking Amirah Love.K in a new direction.

The skin is telling us something

When we see redness, dryness, itching, inflammation, flaking or cracking, our natural reaction is to focus on what we can see.

“How do I get rid of this?”

But perhaps we should also be asking:

“Why is this happening?”

The skin is an organ. It has a barrier, its own microbiome, interacts with the immune system and constantly responds to what is happening both around us and within us.

Atopic dermatitis, for example, can involve interactions between genetics, the skin barrier, immune responses, environmental exposures and the skin microbiome. Psoriasis also involves complex interactions between genetics, the immune system and environmental triggers.

And this is where I think the conversation becomes really important.

There isn't one root cause, I use the phrase “root cause” carefully.

I don't believe there is one universal root cause of eczema, psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.

What contributes to one person's flare may have very little to do with another person's.

For some people, allergies or sensitivities may be an important piece of the puzzle.

For others, it may involve genetics, a compromised skin barrier, environmental exposures, infections, the gut and immune imbalances or a combination of several factors.

Sometimes we may know what the trigger is.

Sometimes we don't.

And sometimes the biggest challenge isn't treating the skin, it's figuring out what is actually driving the problem in the first place.

That's what I want to explore here.

Not quick fixes.

Not one-size-fits-all answers.

And definitely not telling you that everything can be blamed on one thing.

Instead, consider focusing on that individual.

Because your skin isn't my skin.

And your story isn't someone else's story.

Where Amirah Love.K goes from here

This is the thinking behind the next chapter of Amirah Love.K.

I'm going back into research, experimentation and formulation. I'm looking more deeply into ingredients, formulations, the skin barrier and what we actually know about sensitive and problem-prone skin.

I'm asking questions.

I'm testing ideas.

I'm learning.

And I'm taking everything I've learned from creating Amirah Love.K so far and using it to build something better.

I don't want to create another product simply because there is a demand for another eczema cream.

I want to understand why we're creating it, who it's for and what role it should play.

The new Amirah Love.K

As I work towards the relaunch, my goal is to create a new generation of Amirah Love.K products that are thoughtful, effective and of high quality.

I don't want affordability to mean compromising on quality.

And I don't want quality to mean products that are out of reach for the people who need them.

That's the balance I'm working towards.

I'm not going to rush it.

I'd rather take the time to get it right.

And while I'm working behind the scenes, I'll be using this blog to share the journey with you.

We'll explore ingredients, skin science, eczema, psoriasis, allergies, the skin barrier, immune system, the gut, common misconceptions and the things I'm discovering along the way.

Some posts will give you answers.

Others might give you more questions.

And I think that's okay.

Because sometimes finding better answers starts with asking better questions.

This is the beginning of the next chapter of Amirah Love.K.

I'm so glad you're here.
